I was shocked by this information, presented to Syngenta colleagues last week during our United Way of Greater Greensboro workplace campaign. Frank McCain, the organization’s President and CEO, talked of the serious impact of generational poverty. After all, local Rotary Clubs, D 7690, and The Rotary Foundation are all partners in the Out of the Garden Project, along with UWGG. Join us as Laura Tew goes over what she does with the American Association of University Women of North Carolina. Laura is the current American Association of University Women (AAUW) North Carolina STEM Education Chair, maintaining and establishing programs for young women, introducing them to science, application design, web design, and data analytics. This type of exposure chips away at the intimidation many women feel in the world of STEM. Laura currently manages the AAUW-Greensboro website and Facebook page. She was president of the Greensboro Branch from 2019 to 2023. We became a 5 Star Branch under her leadership. We welcome Laura to our meeting and look forward to learning more about AAUW and regional STEM education programs. Laura will also talk about "Sisters of Mine", a performance coming up on 24-August in Greensboro, celebrating ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1920

In 2017, Damien recruited the initial team of 16 female rangers in the Lower Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe. These women became the first Akashinga Rangers (The Brave One). They embarked on a mission to safeguard Zimbabwe's wildlife from the devastating impact of poaching. This marked the beginning of the organization's collaborative approach, working directly with local communities to tackle the challenges of illegal wildlife trade and environmental degradation. Finally, instead of looking in, Akashinga was on the inside looking out, and sustainable and measurable change began to happen.

Brad is a Past District Governor of District 5170 (Silicon Valley) and was a member of the Board of Directors of Rotary International for 2015-2017. In 2016-2017, he served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board and he has served on, and chaired, several Rotary Committees. In 2022-2023 he served as Aide to Jennifer Jones, Rotary’s First Female President. The eradication of polio has been a significant part of Brad’s Rotary experience. He served 10 years as a Zone End Polio Now Coordinator, and has led thirty-six groups of Rotarians, comprised of over 1,700 people, to participate in polio national immunization days in sub-Saharan West Africa and India.

Originally from Ohio, Jim joined the US Air Force after college and completed 28+ years of active duty, serving as a navigator/crew member and senior manager. He completed tours in Southeast Asia, the UK, and Germany as well as numerous stateside locations before retiring in 1993. Jim then joined TYBRIN Corp, an engineering services firm, as their first HR Director where he developed a fully integrated Human Resources staff to support company growth from 245 employees to over 1100. Jim has been a Rotarian for almost 20 years and is currently a member of the Jonesboro Rotary Club of Sanford. He discovered ShelterBox, a UK charity that provides shelter to disaster victim world-wide, through Rotary. Since 2006 Jim has served as a recruiter, response team member, and ambassador for ShelterBox and deployed to Nepal in 2008 and the Philippines in 2013 to deliver aid to disaster victims. Jim has been a member of several professional and service organizations to include serving as an elected Commissioner of a Fire District in Florida for three years. Most recently, he served as an elected Trustee for an Electric Cooperative in Florida. He has completed two Master Degrees in Business Administration and Public Administration. Jim and Donna love to travel and visit their grandchildren

Writer Ananya Vahal and illustrator Carlos "Loso" Perez will discuss their recently released book, “The Ambiguously Brown Couple,” based on their humorous slice-of-life comic series about a couple going through awkward life experiences from being ambiguously brown. The comics are produced by Prime Vice Studios, founded by Loso Perez and co-founded by Ananya Vahal.

Seema Anand, a gifted education specialist, is going to talk about her adventures with GO Global NC Zimbabwe. Go Global NC has an impressive alumni network of thousands of leaders in policy, government, education, business, and communities across North Carolina. Many share the belief that learning to navigate a changing world is essential to North Carolina’s progress.
